Reverend Jason Lee, pioneer Methodist missionary, was born on June 28, 1803 in Stanstead, Quebec. After his ordination in 1834, Jason Lee and his nephew, Daniel Lee, journeyed overland to Oregon to serve the Flathead Indians. It was soon decided to abandon the Flathead mission and establish a new mission in the Willamette Valley. Reverend Gustavus Hines, Methodist missionary, was born in Herkimer County, New York on September 6, 1809. In 1839, Hines was appointed a missionary to Oregon and traveled on the ship Lausanne with his wife, Lydia. Initially, Hines was assigned to assist Jason Lee in exploring the Umpqua Valley for a possible mission site. He spent the remainder of his missionary service, however, at the Willamette Mission.
